Passenger sues Carnival over 'floating hell' cruise

Not even 24 hours after reaching land, a passenger on this week's infamously crippled Carnival cruise in the Gulf of Mexico has filed a lawsuit.

Passenger Terry Cassie of Texas has filed a lawsuit against Carnival in U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Florida. The suit describes Carnival's Triumph cruise ship as a "floating hell."

The Triumph was towed into port in Alabama late Thursday night, five days after it lost power in a engine-room fire. More than 3,000 passengers and 1,000 crew members lived in squalid conditions after the outage, with overflowing commodes splashing floors with waste as the ship listed, passengers reported.

  1. The Truth

    Lawyers have ruined this country.

Fact is the people sueing will get a couple thousand dollars while the lawyers make hundereds of thousands of dollars, if not millions.

You want to start fixing this country? Don't start with health care or taxes or even government waste ... get the lawyers under countrol!!!!

There are probably some archaic maritime laws that are applicable in cases like this. Other than being grossed out, what could you sue for? Since the cruise line is offering refunds etc and you were vacationing! ....Stuff happens?

I've been on many very nice cruises where there are people at the passenger services desk complaining and law suits. It's the American way....
From the reports I've read, some passengers made the best of a less than ideal situation, while others made a point of bring miserable.

They have not read their agreement closely. Short of actually being physically harmed.....Carnival has a clause that says very distinctly...We are not responsible" The only one that will get paid is the lawyer.

Absolutely absurd. Right, Carnival "planned" to have a fire on-board their ship. Listen people, if it wasn't for the sprinkler system that knocked the power out... and put out the fire, there would of been many fatalities. More than 3x the people that live in the United States lack clean, fresh water and working toilets. Did you know more people have mobile phones, then toilets in the world? Not to mention, you were compensated your cruise fees, given a ride home, credit towards another cruise, and $500 a person. You know how much money this is costing Carnival? By no means am I backing Carnival, they've had their fair share of issues but suing over something like this is absurd. By the way, you signed a waiver when purchasing your ticket that pretty much protects Carnival from you suing them. Would you rather have you life and move on or be at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico? I have heard numerous reports from pretty much everyone stating how great the crew was taking care of the guests and working double shifts. Good luck losing this lawsuit.

What happened was awful but when you step on a plane, boat or even Acer you are accepting the risks involved.carnival did the best they could and passengers (some) should have done the same wish life was perfect but you just got to make it work. Nobody died and things could have been much worse. Sucks it happened but not gonna feel sorry for them.

I'm sure the ambulance chasers were stacked up waiting for the ship to dock.

Marinetime have laws also, which usually trumps lawsuits. And even if passengers sue, they won't get much, if anything after paying their attorneys. Isn't this country great?

Someone should pay some bums cash to throw their poop at the people sueing and their lawyers every time the enter or exit the court house!

If I'm on that jury I'm going to question how traumatic it really was when the first thing you do is run to a lawyer. Sounds like a white trash retirement plan.

I would hope a lawyer could only earn a fee on the 'additional' he/she gets her client over and above what the cruiseline is offering on their own.

well you get what you paid for. I do not understand the excitement about a cruise, is it the name? why the heck you want to spend a week on a ship in the middle of the ocean eating buffet and bumping into people you dont like. Crap.

There are people in this world who have to endure worse conditions every day of their life. It's not an ideal situation, but it is nothing more than a vacation gone wrong. Not to mention you get your money back, a free cruise ship and money paid for your flight back. Unless severe negligence was involved, your wasting your money on lawyer fees.
