Complaint filed in transgender child's case

A civil rights complaint is being filed on behalf of a transgendered child barred by her Colorado school district from using girls' restrooms, an advocacy group said Wednesday.

The complaint to a Colorado civil rights agency, on behalf of 6-year-old Coy Mathis, will be the first to challenge a restriction on a transgender person's bathroom use under Colorado's anti-discrimination laws, the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund told reporters in Denver.

First-grader Coy, who was born with male sex organs but identifies herself as female, had been allowed to use her school's girls' bathrooms until school officials barred her from doing so after winter break, her family says.

You know...I'm fairly liberal about most things, but this is effed up. It's one thing to consider that every 6-yr old around this person has to grow up a little bit faster by exposure and association to this person; but, that doesn't mean that they need to have access to show and tell using mixed gender bathrooms. What if this "girl" suddenly realizes that "she's" gay and is attracted to girls? The school would be criticized for changing bathroom rules no matter which way they turned. If they make a policy to clear the girls' bathroom whenever the kid uses it, well there would be an outrage about that too.

I doubt there would be any impact upon other 6 year olds if it were not for hysterical adults. You are dehumanizing a 6 year old child with your choice of verbiage in this post.

If she identifies as a girl, then she's a girl. Nothing wrong with that, and nothing wrong with the parents.

II've decided to identify as a unicorn. Does that make me one? As far as I'm concerned, if people fail to accept me as a unicorn, they are bigoted and hateful and closed-minded! I want my own unicorn bathroom!

Unfortunately, this situation is a little more complicated than that. This is going to come down to pure economics...like most things tend to do. They're not going to build a special restroom for this student, and they're not going to ignore the 99.99 percent of taxpaying parents and students to accomodate this special case. It's not going to be as simple as slapping a label on people who object to attempts to integrate this student into the environment without exceptions. This kids needs to go to a faculty single occupant bathroom, because for the foreseeable future in public schools, "male or female" is not a trick question.

Well, unicorns aren't real, so it isn't really relevant is it? Transgendered people are real. There are really people in this world who feel like they are born to the wrong gender, so to make the argument that they can't feel that way because you can't be a unicorn doesn't really add much to the discussion, unless what you are really saying is that you don't think people can be a gender that they weren't born as.

If she says she's a girl, she's a girl. She may change her mind later, but it sucks that the issue of going to the bathroom is where this issue comes to public consciousness. So she goes in the girls room, big deal. Girls that age might have some questions about it, but to me it's not a big deal.

The parents have FIVE children under the age of eight... he has all sisters... also Katie Couric needs a ratings boost so she had this "family" on her show & now VOILA! Its national news... read off CNN about this boy and his parents... the mother says at 18 months old he said he wanted to be a girl, and cried because when he gets older he will have chest hair & facial hair?! 18 months old???? Yeeaahh right mom... this is sick... poor child. Hey CNN..you lie by omission of facts on your he/she story here...

Yeah, the mother is obviously a failure. When does allowing an 18 month old do whatever hey please good parenting?

This family is a failure and anyone defending this travesty is mentally handicapped and trying to justify their own demons.

Just because it's different, unusual and even a little scary (for us AND them) doesn't mean it isn't real. I know a young adult that when in grade school we all knew was "different" she dressed and acted like a boy. I found out recently she used to cry herself to sleep most nights hoping that in the morning she would awake a boy. HE finally has found the courage to tell his friends and take the steps to live his life as he feels is right and comfortable.I have never seen him so happy. It is a privilege to call him friend. I don't understand hating what you define as different.

okay so what happens when perverted teenage boys figure out they can go into the girls room by putting on a wig and saying that they are transgender. until the parts are removed and modified. sorry kid.. you have to go to the boys room. AND I hope this isn't the parents taking advantage of the system to sue the government for discrimination, and get monetary compensation. HOME SCHOOL THE CHILD.. you are setting her/him major teasing and depression in highschool... this sounds like a ploy to get money

If you know anything about biology or even genetics which you probably don't you'd realize that what makes someone a boy or girl is the chromosomes and what reproductive organs they have. It's not what they believe in their fantasy land in their head.

Wow, you're a horrible person. This is a boy not a girl.. test the DNA.. bet its XY which IS A BOY !!!! I do nto care what this think it is.. bottom line is what you can prove. You can prove easily its a boy.. This whole thing is beyond ridiculous. This country is going to hell quickly..

Call him a girl if you want, but his chromosome pairings and plumbing would beg to differ.

What if this was girl who identifed as being a boy? It's the same thing; a child who identifies with the opposite gender to which he or she was born as. It's who they are inside that matters, I'm just stunned at the small minded posters on this site who take such extreme delight in flaming a child; very mature (sic).

He's a male inside. No reproductive organs = not a female. Don't let emotion get in the way of biology and fact.

yes and inside he has an XY chromosome pairing and male reproductive organs. Hence, it does matter what is on the inside.

What disgusting and warped parents this poor child has. Raising a boy as a girl. Probably have confused the child for life. They should lose custody and serve several years in prison for child abuse.

Some serious issues at home here. Poor kid doesn't have a chance to be a boy. No child knows this at 18 months. They don't even know how to be potty trained yet. Someone is pushing their selfish agenda. Should not be in the news. Should be in child protective services.

I disagree with the writer's opinion. The fact of the matter is, this child is a male, no matter if he "thinks" he's a girl. And shouldn't be able to be known as female. I don't care if males want be be female and dress up like one or whatever, but they shouldn't be able to use the girls bathroom if it isn't allowed for every other male in the school. This child isn't a female, he is a male.

The headline said, "...girl fights school," which is not true. The poor kid's PARENTS are using him as a tool to advance their agenda. Poor child. I hope they can find him a loving home. kids should not be tortured in this way.
