CDC: Man died of rabies from transplant

A Maryland man recently died of rabies that he contracted from a tainted organ he received in a transplant operation more than a year ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

Health care teams are now giving anti-rabies shots to three other patients who received organs from the same donor as the Maryland man, the CDC said.

It was more like 15 months ago, Chrissy.
The case is ground-breaking because it took an inordinate amount of time for the sysmtoms to manifest.

The way the story reads is when the donor died, the medical team didn't bother to run tests to see why ? They harvest the organs and cause three people to become infected with rabies because either they were incompetent or in to much of a rush to make some extra cash. That gives one an extra shot of confidence. Huh ?

Maybe they didn't suspect rabies when the donor died. Maybe he was on his motorcycle on the freeway, started barking and foaming at the mouth, and lost control of the bike. They just figured it was a routine traffic accident. Or something.

The donor died of encephalitis, and didn't bother to find out what caused it in the first place.
Even more chilling is that 3 other people received organs from this particular donor. Yes, Rawr, very shoddy indeed.

People parish all the time for deferent reasons including contegeus flue and other intestinal viruses present and undedicated in foods for cusumer consumption, and food preparation services like restaurants where roches and rodents are wide spread and carry pathogens why the CDC isn't concerned? it's discussing the priority of certain agencies.

@ banasy, have you EVER heard of anyone comming up with rabies more than a year after they were infected??? More than likely he just got infected with rabies and is blaming it on his transplant!!

No, they did an autopsy on him, chrissy, and it was confirmed by the slices of his brain. This is why it is ground breaking; because it DID take 15 months to manifest. He's not blaming anyone. He is dead.

Why don't they slice up the other 3 peoples brains to see if they have rabies too?

So the family is trying to cash in on this most likely and not even thinking of what they are putting the 3 other recipients thru.

I haven't read anywhere that the family was doing anything of the sort.

Do they still administer rabies treatment the same way as they used to ? It used to be 21 shots in the abdomen. I understand that was a very painful ordeal.

Consider organ donation folks. Let your family know wishes. The more people they have to draw from, the more selective they can be.

They shouldn't ever have to get organs from the sick, only from accidents.

I disagree; even if the family is suing the original hospital, so what? Many people sue for reasons that are less than noble; hot coffee lawsuit, anyone? I should think that having a loved one die from a tainted kidney that the hospital didn't test for disease would be a lawsuit worth pursuing. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy, let alone someone I loved.
