Uruguayan lawmakers have approved a same-sex marriage measure, leaving just one step - the president's expected signature - before such couples can wed in the South American country.

Hostage-taker near Atlanta killed

[Update 7:46 p.m.] The man who took several firefighter-paramedics hostage in Suwanee, Georgia, is dead after an exchange of gunfire with police, Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Ed Ritter says. The four remaining firefighters and one police officer suffered superficial wounds, he said.

[Update] The gunman has released one firefighter; four remain inside the house. The gunman let the one hostage out to move the firetruck away from the house, officials said.

[First post, 5:46 p.m.] One firefighter A "barricaded gunman" is holding five Gwinnett County, Georgia, firefighters hostage in suburban Atlanta, a police spokesman said.

The hostage situation began after firefighters responded to "some type of medical call" at a residence in Suwanee, Gwinnett County police spokesman Ed Ritter said.

Police asked local TV stations not to send helicopters over the area, in the interest of assuring the safety of those involved in the situation.

NE Asia on edge ahead over N. Korea

Countries in northeast Asia remained on edge Wednesday amid warnings from U.S. and South Korean officials that North Korea could carry out a missile test at any point.

Japan has deployed missile defense systems around Tokyo, some Chinese tour groups have canceled visits to North Korea, and U.S. radars and satellites are trained on an area of the Korean east coast where Kim Jong Un's regime is believed to have prepared mobile ballistic missiles for a possible test launch.

After weeks of belligerent threats and provocative gestures from Pyongyang, the situation on the Korean Peninsula is fragile.

Police: Texas college attack was planned

Dylan Quick overcame a childhood disability and had big plans for the future.

But on Tuesday, the 20-year-old student went on a stabbing spree on his Texas college campus, authorities said.

By the time campus police took him into custody, 14 people had been injured at Lone Star College. It's unclear how many of the injured were stabbed and how many suffered other injuries.

The campus shut down Tuesday, but will reopen Wednesday.

Fugitives return from Cuba with kids

An American couple who allegedly kidnapped their two sons and sailed to Havana last week sat in a Florida jail Wednesday after Cuba hastily handed them over to U.S. officials.

Cuban authorities turned over the family of four to the U.S. State Department and the FBI after CNN found them in Havana on Tuesday.

They arrived in Florida early Wednesday, where the two boys ages 2 and 4 will get a medical exam, according to Sheriff David Gee of Hillsborough County.
