IRS official takes the 5th at congressional hearing

An Internal Revenue Service official who headed the division involved in targeting conservative groups invoked her constitutional right against self-incrimination Wednesday and refused to answer questions from a congressional committee.

Lois Lerner read a statement at a House Oversight Committee hearing that declared she did nothing wrong and broke no laws before saying she would not answer any questions.

"I have not done anything wrong. I have not broken any laws. I have not violated any IRS rules and regulations," Lerner said, adding that she never misled or lied to Congress, as contended by some legislators.

So Teapartiers can claim tax-exempt status? Why shouldn't they be audited? They get a pass, why? Pay taxes, and it is less likely to gey audited, otherwise face the music.

Pleading the fifth means you DID do something wrong. The fifth ammendment is the right to not INCRIMINATE yourself. Contradictory statement if I ever heard one.

A very crafty lawyer can twist anyones statement @ hamsta. Being able to plead the fifth is there for a reason.

@ hamsta, Just got half way thru the "Times Union" article on this story and need to say I believe any Government official should NEVER be allowed to envoke the fifth. Never. I also find Representative Trey Gowdy of South Carolina statement "You don’t get to tell your side of the story and then not be subjected to cross-examination", on target

501c4 law passed by congress in 1954 says that in order to qualify for the tax exemption, the group must EXCLUSIVLY engage in social welfare. NONE of these 501c4 groups qualify for the tax exemption
