Obama calls for reducing U.S., Russian nukes

President Barack Obama followed in the footsteps of past U.S. leaders with a speech on Wednesday at Berlin's iconic Brandenburg Gate, where he said he would ask Russia to join the United States in slashing its supply of strategic nuclear warheads.

"We may no longer live in fear of global annihilation, but so long as nuclear weapons exist, we are not truly safe," Obama said in the city that symbolized the East-West divide in the decades after World War II.

"After a comprehensive review, I've determined that we can ensure the security of America and our allies - and maintain a strong and credible strategic deterrent - while reducing our deployed strategic nuclear weapons by up to one-third," he said. "And I intend to seek negotiated cuts with Russia to move beyond Cold War nuclear postures."

Film: TWA 800 crash was no accident

A documentary on the 1996 explosion that brought down TWA Flight 800 offers "solid proof that there was an external detonation," its co-producer said Wednesday.

"Of course, everyone knows about the eyewitness statements, but we also have corroborating information from the radar data, and the radar data shows a(n) asymmetric explosion coming out of that plane - something that didn't happen in the official theory," Tom Stalcup told CNN's "New Day."

A number of people have come forward, "all saying the same thing: that there was an external force - not from the center wing tank, there's no evidence of that - but there is evidence of an external explosion that brought down that plane," Stalcup said.

Feds come up empty in Hoffa hunt

A search in a field near Detroit for ex-Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa ended Wednesday, and as with so many past attempts to find him, authorities walked away empty-handed, the FBI said.

Authorities resumed digging in the field Wednesday morning, and a law enforcement source said the search was expanded to a site where a house once stood.

John Anthony, a former FBI special agent involved in the original 1975 hunt for Hoffa, said the tip from alleged mobster Tony Zerilli which prompted this week's renewed search was the most credible he's heard since Hoffa's disappearance - though he still has his reservations, he said.

Police: Day-care operator drugged kids

Getting children to take a nap can be hard. Getting them to eat pancakes is not nearly as difficult.

Police in Westerville, Ohio, say a 37-year-old mother operating a day care out of her home hit upon a plan - she allegedly crushed medications that cause drowsiness and put them in the pancakes.

Tammy Eppley has been charged with six counts of child endangerment. Her first court date is July 12.

Eppley, who runs the Caterpillar Clubhouse, cared for six children - including one of her own - between the ages of 2 and 5, police said.

"This is mortifying. I'm a very private person and I'm very protective of my children and the children in my care," she said.

Brazilian protesters 'time out,' back later

Protesters in Brazil called for a "time out" Wednesday, a glaring contrast to the loud, voluminous demonstrations that reverberated across several cities the day before.

Crowds originally protesting bus fare hikes have grown into multitudes decrying social injustice as broad avenues filled to capacity for blocks.

There were over 200,000 confirmed participants Tuesday, according to the main organizer, the Free Fare Movement. Though the group said it has nothing planned for Wednesday, there may be scattered protests regardless.

Afghanistan suspends security talks with U.S.

Afghanistan has suspended security talks with the United States, Afghan President Hamid Karzai's office said Wednesday.

"In view of the contradiction between acts and the statements made by the United States of America in regard to the Peace Process, the Afghan government suspended the negotiations," his office said.

Washington has been negotiating a bilateral security agreement with Afghanistan which would dictate the terms of an extension for U.S. troops past 2014 and could provide the basis for any future NATO role.

Blaze blamed on campfire roars near Yosemite

A campfire left untended sparked a blaze near Yosemite National Park that is threatening hundreds of homeowners - but firefighters are starting to get a handle on it.

About 500 homes are under mandatory evacuation orders, including one that belongs to Mariposa County Supervisor Kevin Cann.

"My cats are with some friends and the dogs are with some other friends," Cann told CNN affiliate KPGE.

More than 2,000 firefighters are battling the blaze in the steep, rugged terrain west of Yosemite.
