The Zimmerman trial: What you need to know

Opening statements begin Monday in the trial of George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain accused of fatally shooting 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida.

Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder. He says he shot the unarmed teen in self-defense.

A jury of six women will decide Zimmerman's fate, which has already drawn some scrutiny from the public about whether he will get a fair trial.

On the topic of self defence, congratulations to the Atlanta sneaker-line man who shot and killed the armed robber! Yes!

"...scrutiny from the public about...a fair trial?"
A "fair trial" is almost impossible after the racist activism and media campaign that demanded Zimmerman's arrest in the first place.

How did he KNOW Martin only had a bag of Skittles? He didn't exactly have a chance to search him while his head was getting smashed into the concrete.

If he would have let the police do their job, it wouldn't have mattered if he had a bazooka. The confrontation would not have happened and the young man would still be alive.

CNN your headline is "what you gotta know" yet your article contains three small paragraphs that all consist of one sentences. I'm so much more informed now. Thank you for the enlightenment

True @ Miquel, but you should NEVER bring a bag of skittles to a gun fight and think you might win even.

The Zimmerman Trial : What you need to know. Should Read :
The Zimmerman Trial : What we already know.

What we already know is this trial will throw the racial wedge into play again. Some people are looking at the way this went down with Zimmerman overstepping his bounds as a neighborhood watch participant, whose only duty is to detect and report, not detect, follow and confront. If intructions from the 911 operator had been follwed, this tragedy would not have happened.
Others are going to say this trial is racially motivated just in order to quiet down the masses.

@ BOMBO, he didnt have a RIGHT to search him! And also HE was breaking the law himself by carrying a gun while on neighborhood watch!

Actually, thanks to the gun lobby in Florida, he had a carry permit. I'm not saying he was morally right. I am saying that legally, he will beat the charge. There is a difference.

It is expressly against the rules of Neighborhood Watch to carry a gun. One is also supposed to have a partner on Neighborhood Watches, according to NW rules. It doesn't matter if he had a permit or not.

Ya know when you get hurt because you instigate a fight with someone you dont get to cry "foul" later just because you got hurt!!

I find it interesting that I have argued against many of the same people on gun issues, from the other side of the fence on other threads. Let me be clear. I don't think Zimmerman, or any untrained private citizen, should carry a gun. However, under Florida law, he was within his right to do so that night. This is unfortunate, because if he did not have a gun, he would not have felt "brave" enough to confront Martin in the first place and both men would now be alive and well.

You can't have it both ways. If you want permissive gun laws, these kinds of things will happen from time to time.
