Autistic son in dungeon conditions

His room smelled of urine and feces. It had no lighting, no bathroom, and there was only a mattress to furnish it.
That's what police in South Florida found when they responded to an anonymous tip on Thursday evening of a woman keeping her 30-year-old autistic son in "dungeon-like conditions."
"Police found the man's room to be a small room with a blacked-out window and a rusted iron door with a lock accessible only by the outside," said Michelle Hammontree-Garcia of the Sweetwater Police Department, west of Miami.

Health care should cover this, if health care covered some kind of care they would have known about this horror. Many families are ill equipped to handle an autistic child or adult. Autism is on the rise and we all need to address it. Daycare, some kind of social work and education of day to day care.

Health care should pay? You're diffusing responsibility. Parents take care of their own children, and if people cannot care for their offspring they shouldn't have them. Why should the innocent citizenry who had no role in this bear the cost?

Tax dollars would be better spent on eugenics, sterilizing those that are not breeding stock and better gone from the gene pool. Strikes a chord of fear in you, eh?

life-time,long-term stays mental health services is non for scratches, feces, urine everywhere is a given and can be the result of self infliction by the severely austic man...a little bitty woman can't struggle with an otherwise healthy 30 year old man who may not cooperate or fight her due his to mental illnesses/disabilities...the scrooges who called themselves compassionate conservatives no longer fund social services and safety net for this senario...y'all should let the bingo crazed women go...restore welfare and social services...

Thats crap! She should've put him in a home equiped to handle these kids/young adults if he was too much for her to handle! And yes they are out there and there ARE agencys available to help you find one. I know this because my 34 year old son is severely mentally impaired and when he became too big for me to lift i had to do that very thing. If you love your child you do whats in their best interest. Obviously she just wanted that monthly check.

I think if social services gets involved now, maybe she will get help.

@Rascal- hello- I was just going to put an adendum on this, but we know how the social service part works, they are already overloaded with child abuse.

Obama health care, looked it up has given money to states for the detection and put a cap on lifetime disabilities such as this. Too bad so many states have refused co-ops, making it hard to dissiminate programs to help people. This program is in its infancy so I think detection is the 1st step and medicare and medicaid is the way to go and other programs can be found to help. I think many illnesses that people cannot speak for themselves are overlooked, such as mental illness. Advocates for them are far and few.

Thats crap also! At 30 years of age he gets social security. Guaranteed she recieves a monthly check for him. And more than likely she also gets a caregiver check also! All of which would cover the cost of a health care facility! Check it out its true. And besides that when you have a child its unconditional love. If you cant provide that then you should give that child up to someone who can! You dont leave them to rot in some little whole in the wall!

I caught your outrage from your experience. I can feel that. Something the mentallly deranged mother cannot.

This is so sad. Mental health care that was defunded in the 80's surely limited some choices, also. I hope this young man gets what he needs and his "mother" gets what she deserves.

@ banasy, you've been privy to the problems with my son so you know i know what im talking about when it comes to this topic. That woman cannot justify what she has done to that young man. And especially not by blaming the government, all because she wanted to go to freaking bingo???

Yes, Chrissy, I am aware. Which is why I said I hope that the "mother" gets what she deserved.
I don't believe I blamed the government at all, merely stated a fact.

Let me further say, Chrissy, that when it comes to sheer fortitude and spirit, this doofus mother could have taken lessons from the you; your son is indeed lucky to have you.
