Threat prompts U.S. to close embassies

Fears that al Qaeda may launch attacks in the Middle East, North Africa and beyond in the coming days prompted the United States to close 22 embassies and consulates for a day Sunday - an unprecedented move.

The closures Sunday stretch across a swath of North Africa and the Middle East, from Mauritania to Oman.

Bangladesh and Afghanistan, both majority Muslim nations, also are affected.

Normally, Sunday is the start of the work week in those countries.

The shutdowns could extend beyond Sunday, a senior State Department official said.

A U.S. global travel alert is also in place.

I can imagine the CNN bloggers rolling their eyes. First we complain that there are no new stories, then we complain if they post two stories on the same topic. "There is just no PLEASING you people" they must be thinking.

Now watch, I'll get blocked. Or deleted.

Colonialism, despite its expense, was wise. Some persons, by nature, render communication impossible.

Is anyone really fooled by this alert? Sure is convenient timing for a "pre 9/11 chatter" warning. I can't imagine that this has anything to do with a certain three letter agency needing a distraction from its secret program blowing up on its face. I can't believe Obama has turned out to be just as bad as Bush in regards to civil liberties.

@ Mad, much as i hate to admit it, im inclined to agree. However, i think it has more to do with Israel trying to embroil the US in their war efforts. And i just dont get how the finding of a PURSE across the street from an Embasy const it utes a terror threat!

In Bush's America, Al Qaeda was on the ropes. In Obama's America, he precipitously withdraws from Iraq, creates an Al Qaeda state in Libya, arms the Al Qaeda side of the Syria fight, keeps on talking about closing Guantanamo, and suppresses all information about the 9-11 anniversary attack on Benghazi resulting in four dead. Obama is as competent with national defense as he is with the economy.
