Jesse Jackson Jr. going to jail; says he 'manned up'

Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., once a rising Democratic star whose political fortunes imploded over the use of campaign finances to support lavish personal spending, was sentenced to 30 months in prison on Wednesday.

"I misled the American people," Jackson, 48, said before U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson imposed the term, which also included an order for restitution and community service.

The ex-Illinois lawmaker's wife, Sandi, received a 12-month sentence for her role in her husband's misuse of roughly $750,000 in campaign funds over several years.

"I don't have to tell you this is a very sad day and a very difficult case," Judge Jackson said, calling it an example of organized and joint misconduct and a violation of the public trust.

"You knew better," she said.

Bradley Manning apologizes, tells court he must pay price

Convicted leaker Army Pfc. Bradley Manning acknowledged Wednesday that by leaking tens of thousands of pages of classified documents he "hurt people and hurt the United States."

"I understood what I was doing was wrong but I didn't appreciate the broader effects of my actions," he said during his sentencing hearing at Maryland's Fort Meade. "I only wanted to help people, not hurt people."

The former Army intelligence analyst was convicted of stealing and disseminating 750,000 pages of classified documents and videos to WikiLeaks. The counts against him included violations of the Espionage Act. He was found guilty of 20 of the 22 charges against him, and he could face up to 90 years in prison if the judge imposes the maximum sentence.

Egypt sees bloodiest day since 2011 revolt

Military raids on protest camps and vicious battles that followed left scores dead Wednesday in Cairo, starting a new turn in the tumultuous cycle that has rocked Egypt for more than two years.

Clashes between Egyptian security forces and supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsy made it the country's bloodiest single day since the 2011 revolution that ousted the previous president, longtime strongman Hosni Mubarak.

"It's an open war," said one protester who managed to escape one of the two protest camps.

At least 149 people were killed and more than 1,400 were wounded, state TV reported. Interim Interior Minister Gen. Mohammed Ibrahim said later Wednesday that 43 police officers had died in the violence.

E-mail reveals bra sizes of Detroit officers

There are certain questions you just don't ask women. Heaven help you if you share that information.

Imagine the reaction after a commander with the Detroit Police Department accidentally sent out an e-mail listing not only the weight of about 20 female officers, but also their bra sizes. The measurements were taken when the officers were fitted for bullet proof vests.

"This was not done maliciously. It was clerical error," Assistant Chief James White told CNN affiliate WDIV on Tuesday. "It is not the practice of the police department to share sensitive information."
