The United States may have to take action against Syria without the support of one of its staunchest allies, U.S. officials said Thursday after British lawmakers voted down a proposal for military action.
Washington respects the vote, U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said Friday.
"Every nation has a responsibility to make their own decisions, and we respect that of any nation," he told journalists in the Philippine capital, Manila.

So now we are talking about a unilateral strike against Syria !? And the people here keep wondering why we are so hated in that part of the world.
Let me ask this question. If we had an invading and occupying force in this country, killing ( or even not killing, just occupying ) our people on a daily basis, would just even the mere presence of this force be acceptable to you ?
No. And people need to get over the idea that it IS acceptable. The world looks at us in a different light since the Iraq debacle.
We must stay out of Syria. They have not attacked the US in any way, and we have no cause to be there. It is one thing to send humanitarian help, another to attack a sovereign nation that hasn't done anything to the US.
Don't ask that of us. Butch did that all on his own. But I will say many people are happier under occupation than they were with Who's Sane. Believe it or not, our presence will be missed in Iraq... even more so in Afghanistan.
Let them miss us. About time to get the hell outta there. Let the animals figure out their own dang problems. Point is. They never will.
@ Hope
It really depends on which portion of the populace you ask about the occupation. Those that are in power now, most definitely are happier now that the occupation is over. Since the only stabilizing factor was removed from power, terrorist factions have been able to fill the power gap and it's been on a downward spiral ever since. It just goes back to the old saying, " If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Agree@bobcat and @banasy
Surrounded by violent death , trapped in the crossfire of occupiers and 'insurgents' being bombed from above and killed on the ground, losing children, men and women on a daily basis. I don't know of any people who would be happy being invaded and their country occupied in this manner. 11th year on,
Its very easy to surmise that like those up on the HIll do , surrounded by comfort, safe and secure oceans away from the 'action'.
we will see if you still feel this way if assad gasses thousands of men,women and CHILDREN! Wonder how you will feel when someone brings this horror to our own shores! If this goesa unanswered, its not if any of this will happen, but when this WILL happen. It may be 1 week, 1 month, 1 year or a few years, no question judging from past.{Hitler?}
