Obama: Only one way out of shutdown

President Barack Obama went on a rhetorical offensive against House Republicans on the third day of the federal government shutdown, telling a crowd in Maryland Thursday that there's only one party at fault and one remedy.

"There are enough Republicans and Democrats in the House of Representatives today that if the speaker of the House, John Boehner, simply let the bill get on the floor for an up or down vote, every congressman could vote their conscience, the shutdown would end today," Obama said in a speech in Rockville, Maryland.

"The only thing that is keeping the government shut down, the only thing preventing people from going back to work, and basic research starting back up, and farmers and small business owners, getting their loans - the only thing that's preventing all that from happening right now today, in the next five minutes, is that Speaker John Boehner won't even let the bill get a yes or no vote because he doesn't want to anger the extremists in his party."

Reporting on a presidential speech is news. Because you don't like the speaker doesn't make it any less news. Sorry.

I have seen more republicans on CNN than democrats. Eric Cantor cannot get the doctors and nurses on CNN and say that kids with cancer at a research center that is funded by the government ( with a puppy face) in which his party is the cause of. This rests solely on the backs of republicans. This is their bad. They have shutdown the government, now deal with your consequences. Don't act like you are a champion for the american people Eric Cantor, but will not support those kids with an insurance that will treat these kids without a cap. Disgusting. Disgraceful.

Yes, those 30 children with cancer whose last chance is this clinical trial? Nice. But hey, pass a resolution to keep the monuments open. The things you can see, don'tcha know.

I hope that the President continues to stand firm. Didn't Boehner and the most extreme-right Republicans learn in the 2012 elections which way the river is flowing?

The budget crisis looms , if the debt ceiling is not raised in time the consequences would be far more serious.
But those nurtured by teapartiers giddy with the 'success' of shutting down US govt would go further in their quest for damaging the US.

I just can't believe that Boehner would let himself be controlled by this minority TP group. Is he really so full of himself, that he cherishes being speaker over what he knows inside is the right thing to do.

But the most unconscionable thing is the fact these people (and I use that term very sarcastically) continue to get paid. How can this be ? They involuntarily sent, what could end up to be, 800,000 workers home without pay. The majority of these have families. What do they do ? It's obviously clear that our "leaders" don't give a rats butt. It's that old motto of "Hey, I got mine."

I have watched the house for 2 solid days on c~span and Boehner will not even let Republicans try to get the bill on the table to vote on. Every single time ANY member of the Reps bring it up he imediaitely tells them they are out of order and cuts them off. And that is anyone no matter which party it is! So i guess in all of the US we only have 2 clowns that have any say in anything. Boehner and Cruz!

@chrissy- I wonder if they can recall the speaker and vote on a new one? I wonder how many votes they would need?

Boehner has stated to his aides that he will not let the country default. He hasn't, of course, said this publicly, naturally. After Norquist throwing Cruz (conspicuously absent lately), what can be next in this soap opera?

We're keeping a close eye on it. Depending on how quick that front coming from the west gets here, will determine where she will go.

Lol @ Matt, WHERE did you go to school? Of course Obama won't see the WH again because a POTUS is only allowed 2 terms! Too bad thats not the case for members of Congress! They can be in office forever, even long after they have lost all practical sense!
