With 25 million people in its path, Super Typhoon Haiyan - one of the strongest storms recorded on the planet - smashed into the Philippines on Friday morning.
As the storm plowed across the cluster of islands in the heart of the country, casualties were reported, more than 100,000 people took shelter in evacuation centers and hundreds of flights were canceled.
The storm brought tremendously powerful winds roaring ashore as it made landfall in the province of Eastern Visayas, disrupting communications with a major city in its path.

Word @ ruperts 9:12 post! Not even a good imitation.
But it's the Truth.
Ask Mary–she'll tell you,
Or Jazz.
I know it's the truth because the nurse told me I used to be on television.
@ all my good buddies,
They're telling me I have to go to sleep now.
Good night.
Hmmm @ Joey, Mary or Jazz, whichever name you prefer, does not post here anymore. And even if she did i don't see how she could ever convince me that YOU have posed nude!
Such a bad storm. Over 10,000 lives gone. So devastating.
So true @ Bruce. I was just watching some clips of it on the news and holey moley! Ive never seen anything like it.
@JIF, I have written a check for $300 to the Philippines Red Cross in an effort to alleviate the suffering of the survivors. What have you done? I mean, besides writing trite expressions of sorrow here which are more for yourself and your ego than to actually help anything. What have you done?
I would like to contribute, but am having some tough times myself since I was thrown off my own insurance plan and compelled to pay higher premiums under obamacare. Here you have hardworking people who were repeatedly told not to worry, that their coverage would stay the same and – if anything – their costs would go down. Just the opposite is happening. But if I had anything to spare I would donate.
I would like to contribute something, but I have nothing left since I was thrown off my insurance plan and compelled to pay higher rates under the "affordable" care act.
Re last night, I turned a new leaf last week. I meant no malice at all to anyone, and I spoke only truth.
@Julio. I have to offer you my other cheek to slap. I have given much to other causes, but I cannot to this cause. I am honestly sorry.
@ Maria, well thank goodness that new medical tax break will reimburse you the difference (between your old premium and your new premium cost) and then some huh? Its like having a new savings account!
@chrissy, what if Maria "...is an artist...living at home,' and does not fall there? "...and who shall ever tell the sorrow of being on this earth..."
(Stolen from James Agee)?!!!!
The news yesterday of 1200 lives being lost due to the storm in the Philippines was saddening. Now they are saying that 10,000 people died in one city alone. That kind of leaves one speechless.
Good morning all.
