Truck with radioactive material stolen

A pair of thieves in Mexico may have stolen more than they bargained for when they targeted a truck this week.

The stolen vehicle was carrying a delicate cargo - a radioactive element used for medical purposes, but one that can be used to make a so-called dirty bomb.

The International Atomic Energy Agency announced the theft Wednesday.

Mexican authorities told the IAEA that the truck, which was transporting the cobalt-60 teletherapy source from a hospital in Tijuana to a radioactive waste storage center, was stolen Monday in Tepojaco, near Mexico City.

lets get Mexico under sanctions. A radioactive element that is used for medical purposes but " one that could be used for making a so called dirty bomb"
In fact all such elements should be outlawed everywhere. We have a precedence , take Iran.

Man, do some research before you post – elements capable of being used to make a dirty bomb are plentiful and extremely easy to refine. A dirty bomb is just a regular bomb with some radioactive material that gets spread around. There is no conceivable way of banning all radioactive elements...

I guess your sarcasm was a little to deep for him saywhat. And there is also that possibility that they were just out to steal a truck.

There is nothing "medical" about Iran's uranium enrichment. In fact, there is nothing "peaceful" about it as they claim. As you seem to claim on their behalf.

Specifically, natural uranium is less than one percent of the 235 isotope. To be useful as fuel in a power plant you need to enrich to three or four percent. It is an arduous process. It becomes much more arduous to go much beyond that level. And it does not make the fuel more efficient to go to say, 10 %, or more.

Two guys are bungee-jumping one day. The first guy says to the second. "You know, we could make a lot of money running our own bungee-jumping service in Mexico." The second guy thinks this is a great idea, so the two pool their money and buy everything they'll need – a tower, an elastic cord, insurance, etc.

They travel to Mexico and begin to set up on the square. As they are constructing the tower, a crowd begins to assemble. Slowly, more and more people gather to watch them at work. The first guy jumps. He bounces at the end of the cord, but when he comes back up, the second guy notices that he has a few cuts and scratches.

Unfortunately, the second guy isn't able catch him, he falls again, bounces and comes back up again. This time, he is bruised and bleeding. Again, the second guy misses him.

The first guy falls again and bounces back up. This time, he comes back pretty messed up – he's got a couple of broken bones and is almost unconscious. Luckily, the second guy finally catches him this time and says, "What happened? Was the cord too long?"

The first guy says, "No, the cord was fine, but what the heck is a 'pinata'?"

nothing you can do to stop it. it's happening right now from natural sources of radiation that are all around you. the only difference is the dose rate

He was a big whiner. He had it pretty good living on the taxpayer's dime for 27 years. Three squares a day. Free healthcare. Board games. Pretty sweet deal.
