Maria Alyokhina, a member of Russian punk band Pussy Riot who was serving a two-year jail term for her part in a performance critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been released from prison.
Alyokhina's release from a prison in the Krasnoyarsk region of Siberia was confirmed by Pyotr Verzilov, the husband of fellow band member, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova.
Tolokonnikova, who is also imprisoned, is expected to be released later Monday, Verzilov said.
Even living with American freedom of speech, I find the name of this punk group offensive. It degrades women rather than empowering them.
I really am not a fan of these young ladies or their antics. I think Putin's actions were correct.
Both members that were still in prison have been released.
I agree with you @ Joey. It is offensive!
I'm not so sure that I agree with the general consensus here. These women protested for a good cause. Do we not as human beings have a right to do so? Unless of course you live in a totalitarian government.
Oh i agree with what they did and especially WHY they did it! I think you may have misinterpreted what we said. We were talking about their name choice being offensive especially to women.
@chrissy. Not the best choice word, very true. You would think that as bright and talented as they are a better word, maybe Coyote Riot?
Why not something like Chicago Symphony Orchestra or New York Philharmonic?
Metropolitan Opera?
Bolshoi Bad Girls? Maybe Bolshoi Bi–
No, not that.
Lmao sorry @ Joey, Rachels choice is better, given the type of band they are!
The Banshees was taken.
That's the best name they could come up with? lol
