Jahi McMath, the 13-year-old girl on a ventilator who was declared brain dead by doctors in California after tonsil surgery, was released from a hospital to her mother Sunday night.
"The body of Jahi McMath was released by Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland to the coroner," said David Durand, the hospital's chief of pediatrics. "The coroner has released her body to the custody of her mother, Latasha Winkfield, as per court order, for a destination unknown."
She left the hospital accompanied by a critical care team, attached to a ventilator, but with no feeding tube in place.
FULL STORY
Such a sad, sad thing to have happened.
No kidding! Who would have thought a tonsillectomy would lead to that. Sad.
How sad is right. Can't imagine whet her family is going through.
Very sad. Her poor family, too.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Tragic.
oh pleeze...this dumbazzz hospital spokeperson called this comatose child "a body" and linked her released from the coroner's care...I believe jahi is a patient discharged from the ward...in a bed...and was being treated (however poorly) by doctors not the coroner...so if ariel sharon was a patient here...you would call him "a
body"??? This hospital failed to provide basic sustanance to this patient...a complaint should be filed against it's accredications, against those physicians...also hippa
violations...y'all behinds need to be kicked! you have a herodian death panel in your facility...the girl was not released from a
morgue box...you vultures of death...obamacare/hhs manhaters!
Her unfortunate surgery was in December, before the ACA went into affect.
Although I agree with the majority of your post that I could understand, the ACA was not the cause of this tragedy.
@RascalRabble, Google "Dr. Heidi Flori Jahi" and read the PDF report to the court describing the state of Jahi's body... This is not someone being cruel, this is the reality that the girl has already passed – she is already with Him. We need to pray for the family that they can heal from her loss. The report says describes "Ms. McMath's post-mortem bodily deterioration which is already underway..." – in other words, her body is beginning to decompose. She was declared dead on December 12th, and that is why she was sent to the coroner – for the determination of cause of death and issuing a death certificate, which has happened. This little girl appears to have had a blood disorder that prevented her blood from clotting – something that the family did not disclose to the doctors treating her, and which likely directly contributed to her death from bleeding and ultimately a heart attack during part of the surgery. I hope that you can find peace knowing that she is already passed from this world, and pray for her family to find peace they desperately need.
@bec you and hospital can leak whatever documents you want...the child must be a saint...with her turtle spaced decay...it does not make a difference whom I with...the judge compelled the hospital to do what was right...don't call a person dead if you don't want to continue to treat injuries you inflicted upon them...let them go to another facility...
@bec...lol...it's 1/7/2014 and jahi is still above ground baby...
Life and definition of what constitute being alive and personhood and dignity is being falsely redefine here...soo nazi...these institutional killings...
This shady hospital sure was in an awful hurry to get this child declared dead amwmd burried! Am i the only one to find all this rather peculiar? Not to mention the reason as to HOW this happened in the first place!
i agree chrissy...that same old flimsyazzz definition "brain dead" to harvest organ from the living...those donors ain't dead when they remove those organs...the definition of death becomes "because-i-said-so"...those of you signing the back of the license y'all worth more dead (killed by harvesting) than alive...cadavers do not provide good organs...brave new world is here!
Chrissy, the surgery was successful, the McMaths IGNORED the post-op instruction that Jahi was NOT TO TALK OR EAT. And then unfortunately GRANDMAMA made the fatal error of suctioning Jahi's throat. THAT"S why the McMaths haven't allowed an autopsy or buried/cremated the poor kid. They'd rather
The McMaths would rather let their precious child's corpse ROT than accept responsibility for their actions. They know darn well that no doctor will put a feeding tube in a corpse, nor is there any facility that will actually take a corpse, yet they've taken money from the public. She isn't going to any "facility"; they've obviously just brought her back to their home, where she'll unfortunately continue to rot until the health dept. has to get involved.
whattayou a fly on the wall...if the patient risks was that high and critical...she should have been in an restrictive intensive care unit...with nurses provide care...not grammy...hospital at fault...then they try to off the little girl to cover its series of blunders...
Because of the fear people have that improper diagnosis of death, it is common that hospitals today have two physicians who are not involved already with the patient, and who do not participate in the organ donation process, must assess the patient to confirm the death. The only reason her heart is beating is because a machine is beating it for her, and the reason she does not have a feeding tube is because the body can only digest food if the lower brain stem is functioning – which it is not. The girl has been dead since December 12th – there is no possibility of digestion, of breathing, or healing. Her body is already beginning to decay, according to the reports that have been filed with the court. Please let this girl rest in peace, and pray for her family... she had a blood disorder, and bled profusely during the surgery, and then had a heart attack – this is why she died. I fear for the family's sanity when they realise that she has been dead for weeks... please pray for them.
@bec with the turtlepaced decay the child must be a saint...the judge ruled that if you don't want to treat the injuries you inflicted let her go to another facility...jahi was not released to a morgue she was escorted by a team of critical care providers...as for their self serving leaks let them speak under scrutiny of a state medical review and licensing boards, despositions of attorneys, and joint
commission whomever accreditated that hospital...
we remember eyes opened, responsive terri schiavo...
I read a few years back how Isreal was harvesting organs in India and selling them on the black market. Nothing knew to me @ RR. How have you been sir?
lol...girl dontchookno' rabblements are genderless?!?!?
3 guesses which "facility" they really moved her to, and the first 2 don't count. This pathetic circus isn't likely to end until their unfortunate next door neighbors have to call the in health dept. to force the McMaths to bury or cremate the decaying corpse like they should have done weeks ago,
who are you advocating for here...the doctors and the hospital never apologized they rather placated their role in this debacle at the expense of the patient and her parents...they refuse place a peg tube provide basic nutritional support...refuse to assist in placing the patient at another facility...they had to hire attorney's to compell the hospital to provide care...so sad...the hospital violated the patient's rights...so disgusting...if they did it to her they can do it to you...
pictures of jahi in her comatose state does not show a bloated decaying body
What's "rabblements?
itsah rather small candied food item characterized by the presence of peppermint or spearmint oil flavorings and it usually found in the mouth of the one who rabbles...rabblements usually are found in places of exchange like banks, bars, restaurant, offices and desks...occasionally the high end hotels may leave small tokens of rabblements on the pillows of their guests after have turned down their beds...i hope this helps...not too many people take time out of their bizzy schedule to understand the rabble...
Do you mean a mint?
now! now! cindi...you've watched and digested enough news media and panel discussions to know it is "okay" to change, twists, redefine, and make up werds...red states and blue states are made up...arbitrary assignments given by some knucklehead to describe political inclinations...rabblements are things that people use rabble...
I take it you don't engage in rabblements
The ACA wasn't the cause of this tragedy. Ignorant assertion.
Agreed. And I can't stand the law
beg to differ...classic overthrow approach...policy prevails over standards of practice, over the blatantly obvious, and over common sense...aca policies supports providing contraceptives, abortificants and sex education to ANY age groups...that means pre-k, k, 1st graders, etc groups are not even active...this "policy" attempts to override authority of our admendments and rights and freedoms and ignore the will and legitimate voice of the people: it's elected officials...the lgtb are using rogue judges to implement its policies...abortionists/planned parenthood use the same forum: "policies"...illegitimate forms of goverment: a policy and rogue judges. judges are not to create laws...we have elected legislators for that...
that is why dr durand can stand comfortablly with his stupidity before the world calling jahi a corpse under coroner's care as they wheeled the child from with his warped institution's policies and idiosyncrasy definition of
death...aca woulddo the same to you..
Oh good grief! Thats the flimsiest thing i ever heard of. And also the 1st time ive ever heard of someone being braindead from a tonsilectomy either!
AGAIN, Jahi would have been just fine if HER FAMILY had followed medical advice.
Alyssa...you not the doctor treating this patient...nor a prophet that can surmise outcomes...the child was under the hospital care not the care of family members...the popsicle you keep mentioning most likely came from hospital supplies...why are you tryin to vindicate this hospital...this is not a sad saga or some personal family tragedy...this is a sentinel event that should be thoroughly investigated...that coroner should be investigated too!
It wasn't a tonsilectomy – it was three part surgery with tonsils, uvula, and sinuses, and she had a blood clotting problem that the family did not dislcose to the surgical team prior to surgery, according to court documents published online – and she started bleeding during surgery, and suffered a heart attack (she was also morbidly obese). Surgery is not every risk-free, but not disclosing a blood clotting condition in your medical history is about the worst thing you could do. I'm not blaming the family – but the hospital should not be considered at fault in that case either.... in other words, unfortunate things happen every day, and this was a very unfortunate combination of circumstances combined with the normal risks of surgery of any kind, no matter how 'simple' we perceive it to be.
jahi suffered from sleep apnea and went in to remove the obstruction.
...who knows...may have cut vessels involved with cerebral circulation...she bled from the nose and the mouth...
Am I the only one angry at CNN?? On the Dr. Drew show last night, they were discussing the case of Jahi. They were laughing, making jokes and stating that the family of Jahi was keeping the location of where she was being moved a secret. (As it should be) Dr. Drew and his co-harts (Or should I say Co-heartless!!!) gave out the location not only once, but three or four times! That poor family. What is this world coming to. I don't tweet, I never answer things like this but I felt compelled to do on this subject. It is bad enough that Jahi is in this horrible condition. Her family is doing everything possible as we all SHOULD DO. Then to have the media give out the location? How can that be legal? Shame on you CNN and Dr. Drew! Your show will never be on my television screen.
Once again people making comments as if they were there during this poor girls operation? While any operation has its consequences the simple fact, for me, is that this SHOULD have been a normal procedure and something went terribly wrong! Hospitals hold all the blame in things like this as we TRUST them to be professional and know how to perform their tasks! IF this hospital did nothing wrong then they should make available a complete and concise report on everything that happened! My sympathy and prayers for the family YES, but not for the hospital as there are way to many unanswered questions right now!
First off, this was not the routine procedure that the news keeps stating since they have failed to do basic fact checking. It was a complicated and delicate three part surgery that carried high risks which was why she was in the PICU. Please google the court filings to read doctor reports.
Also, due to HIPPA laws, the hospital is unable to common on patients outside of very basic information for privacy reasons. Trust me, it will all come out in court and I think you just might shocked to discover who is really at fault here and I don't mean the hospitals or doctors.
