'Indefinite recess' in Anthony trial

Another argument over witness testimony has put the Casey Anthony murder trial on what Judge Belvin Perry called an indefinite recess just as the prosecution's rebuttal case was about to begin.

Attorneys in the case appear split on how long the delay will take. Defense attorney Jose Baez complained Friday morning that prosecutors sprang new evidence on him last night and that he needs time to interview the witnesses.

But prosecutor Jeff Ashton says the witnesses he intends to put on aren't going to say anything that should surprise the defense.

Perry had said previously that he expected testimony to conclude Friday with closing arguments on Saturday morning.

Meter reader who found girl's body may testify in Casey Anthony trial

The meter reader who discovered Caylee Anthony's remains could testify Tuesday as a defense witness in the murder trial of her mother Casey, his attorney said.

Roy Kronk has been ordered to report to court at the start of the day, according to his attorney David Evans.

In his opening statement, Anthony defense attorney Jose Baez pointed the finger of responsibility at Kronk, who discovered Caylee's body on December 11, 2008, according to a sheriff's detective.

According to the defense, Kronk actually discovered the remains months earlier. Baez called Kronk "a morally bankrupt person who took Caylee's body and hid it ... he thought he had a lottery ticket. ... He can't be ignored in this."

Evans denied the accusations made by Baez.

In developments Monday, Anthony, who is accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter in 2008, was determined competent to proceed with her capital murder trial after she was examined by two psychologists and a psychiatrist over the weekend, the judge said.

Psychologists: Casey Anthony is competent

Casey Anthony, charged with killing her 2-year-old daughter in 2008, underwent examinations by three psychologists over the weekend after her defense team filed a motion to determine her competency to proceed, the judge in her trial said Monday.

All three psychologists found Anthony competent, Orange County Chief Judge Belvin Perry said out of the jury's presence. Their reports will be sealed, he said. It was implied - but not expressly stated - that the motion was the reason for the abrupt recess Perry called on Saturday.

The resumption of the trial Monday was delayed for more than a half-hour as attorneys huddled in Perry's chambers.

Saturday had been planned as an extended weekend work day in the trial. But Perry ordered a recess over the sudden emergence of what one analyst said must be a major issue.

"Obviously it's big, and obviously it's troublesome and obviously it's something that can't be disclosed," HLN legal analyst Linda Kenney Baden said.

Perry emerged from his chambers Saturday morning after nearly an hour of discussion with lawyers both inside and outside the courtroom to announce the day's planned testimony would be canceled.

Caylee Anthony could climb pool stairs, grandmother says

Two-year-old Caylee Anthony was able to climb into the family's backyard pool on her own, but she couldn't have installed the removable ladder or opened gates leading to the area, her grandmother testified Friday at the outset of an emotional day in the Casey Anthony murder trial.

Defense attorneys are trying to prove that Caylee could have accidentally drowned in the family pool on June 16, 2008. They argue Casey Anthony and her father panicked on finding the girl's body and covered up her death.

Prosecutors argue Casey Anthony used chloroform to render her daughter unconscious, put duct tape on her nose and mouth to smother her, then stored her body in the trunk of her car for a few days before disposing of the remains in a wooded field.

On the Radar: Afghanistan, Huntsman, Greece, summer

Afghanistan drawdown - President Barack Obama will announce Wednesday how many U.S. troops he'll bring home from Afghanistan when the drawdown begins next month. Obama is expected to announce the approval of a plan that would result in 30,000 U.S. "surge" forces being withdrawn by the end of 2012, an administration official told CNN. There are about 100,000 U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan, including the so-called surge ordered in 2009 in a bid to control violence there.

Huntsman as GOP candidate - Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman is set to announce Tuesday his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination. He's a motorcycle-riding Mormon who speaks fluent Mandarin, a soft-spoken father of seven with eclectic political connections. He was ambassador to China for President Barack Obama, whom he once described as a remarkable leader. That could make the primary season difficult for him.

Anthony defense threatened with contempt

The judge in the Casey Anthony murder trial ordered a defense witness off the stand Saturday and threatened attorney Jose Baez with contempt proceedings for failing to tell prosecutors about the witness' planned testimony.

Forensic anthropologist William Rodriguez told Judge Belvin Perry after the jury had been excused that he was preparing to tell jurors that no conclusions can be drawn from duct tape found near 2-year-old Caylee Anthony's body because of decomposition and movement of the bones by animals.

Rodriguez also said he planned to testify that a video prepared by a prosecution expert superimposing Caylee's living face with a picture of her skull and the outline of a piece of duct tape was an "unheard of" application of technology meant only to provide initial identifications of remains.

Rodriguez' opinions are critical rebuttals of the prosecution's theory that duct tape found clinging to the girl's remains was essentially the murder weapon, used to cover her mouth and nose after her mother knocked her unconscious with chloroform.
