World Update: Iraqi hotel blaze kills 29

An update from London on some of the international stories we expect to develop on Friday:

Iraq blaze: Women, children and foreigners were among 29 people killed in a fire Thursday night at the Soma hotel in the city of Sulaymaniyah, northern Iraq, police and health officials said. Read more

Explosion in Mexican border town: Three people were killed in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Thursday night, including two police officers and a paramedic, authorities said. A federal police spokesman said the blast was caused by either a grenade or a car bomb. Read more

UK troops claim: A man claiming to be the Afghan soldier who killed three British troops this week contacted the BBC to say he acted alone, the British broadcaster has reported. Read more

Reports: Lebanon fires on Israeli warplanes: The Lebanese army fired anti-aircraft guns Wednesday, according to state media, with the government saying Israel violated its airspace. Israeli Defense Forces are declining comment.

N. Korea threatens military action: Pyongyang has accused the South Korean navy of trespassing into its waters and threatened to retaliate with military action, the Yonhap news agency has said.

Unrest spreads in Jamaica: Violence related to the planned extradition to the United States of an alleged drug kingpin has continued, with police saying a number of people died in an attack on the suspect's stronghold in the west of the capital Kingston. Full story

Thaksin faces terrorism charges: A Thai court has issued a warrant against the country's ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on terrorism charges connected with the violent clashes that crippled Bangkok for weeks, the former prime minister's lawyer said. Full story

World update: Thai opposition leader dies

'Renegade' Thai protest leader dies: Doctors in Bangkok, Thailand, have announced the death of Maj. Gen. Khattiya Sawasdipol, a key anti-government leader who was wounded by a sniper's bullet last week. At least 36 people have now died in the bitter standoff between anti-government protesters and troops since Thursday. Full story

Report: Iran to send uranium to Turkey: Iran has agreed to ship its low-enriched uranium to Turkey, state media said Monday. Western nations had been asking Iran to send the low-level uranium out of the country to be enriched elsewhere, but the country had resisted until now. Full story
